How to Fix a Blowing Electric Furnace Fuse

Your electric furnace just tripped a breaker or blew a fuse. Again.

It’s frustrating. You check the thermostat, set it to heat, and wait for warmth. Nothing happens. Or worse, the heat comes on for ten minutes and then cuts out, leaving you shivering in the dark.

Most homeowners panic here. They call a pro immediately. They assume the unit is dead.

But an electric furnace is simple. It doesn’t have gas lines. It doesn’t have complex combustion systems. It’s mostly wires, switches, and heating elements. If you know what to look for, you can often fix this yourself.

Here is how to troubleshoot an electric furnace that keeps blowing fuses or tripping breakers.

Safety First: Turn Off the Power

Before you touch anything, kill the power.

Locate the disconnect switch near the furnace. It’s usually a white or gray box on the wall next to the unit. Flip the switch to “Off.”

If there is no external switch, go to your main circuit breaker panel. Flip the breaker for the furnace to “Off.”

Warning: Never open the electrical panels or touch wiring while the power is on. You are dealing with 240 volts in most electric furnaces. That voltage can kill you.

Step 1: Check the Reset Button

Many electric furnaces have a manual reset button on the high-limit switch. This is a small red or yellow button, usually located on the heat exchanger or near the blower motor.

If the furnace overheated, this button pops out.

  1. Wait for the furnace to cool down completely. It can take an hour or more.
  2. Press the button in. You should hear a click.
  3. Turn the power back on.
  4. Turn the thermostat to heat.

If the furnace runs without tripping the breaker, you had an overheating issue. This is often caused by a dirty air filter or a blocked vent. Clean the filter. Check the vents. If it happens again, the limit switch may be faulty.

Step 2: Inspect the Air Filter

A clogged air filter is the number one cause of electric furnace problems.

When air can’t flow through the system, heat builds up inside the heat exchanger. The high-limit switch trips to prevent damage. If this cycle repeats, it can blow fuses or trip breakers.

  1. Remove the filter.
  2. Look at it. If it’s gray, black, or clogged with dust, replace it.
  3. Check the size. Make sure the new filter fits snugly. Gaps allow air to bypass the filter, which defeats the purpose.

Replace the filter and test the furnace.

Step 3: Examine the Heating Elements

Electric furnaces use heating elements to warm the air. They are similar to the coils on an electric stovetop. These elements can burn out or short out.

A shorted element draws too much current. This blows the fuse or trips the breaker immediately or after a short period.
