Screws and nails look similar. They are small. They hold things together. But they function differently. Nails are hammered in for permanent bonds. Screws can be removed and replaced without wrecking the material. They are usually metal. Many have rustproof coatings to last longer.

But not all screws are the same. You have to look at the head shape. The thread pattern matters too. And the specific purpose changes everything.

Pan Head vs. Flat Head

Machine screws are the heavy lifters for holding machinery together. Usually, you need to drill a hole and tap it first. Some newer types can tap their own holes, but that is less common.

When you shop for these screws, the head shape tells you how they sit in the material.

  • Pan head screws have a flat top. The sides are rounded.
  • Oval head screws also have rounded sides. But the top is rounded too. They have tapered bases.
  • Flat head screws have a flat top. The underside is tapered. This allows them to sit flush with the surface. You won’t see a bump.
  • Round head screws have a flat bottom. The head looks like half a sphere. They stick out. They never sit flush.

Pan head and oval head screws are common for metal applications. Flat head screws are better if you want a smooth finish. Round head screws are purely functional. They poke out like little bumps.

Slot Types and Tools

The head shape isn’t the only factor. The slot type determines which tool you use.

A slotted pan head screw has a single straight cut. You need a standard flat-blade screwdriver. It is simple. It works for basic jobs.

A Philips pan head screw has a cross cut. You need a Phillips screwdriver. This design provides better grip. It reduces the chance of the driver slipping out and stripping the head.

Which option fits your project? If you are building a metal frame, pan heads are standard. If you need a flush surface, go for flat heads. Just make sure you have the right driver for the slot.
